The strain on Martin and Louisa's relationship is beginning to tell and when he refuses to talk about the loss of his father, she suggests they go on a family break so they can spend some time together.
Typically, Martin won't hear of it and she then rather unwisely suggests that he hands out the medals at her school sports day. Reluctantly, he does so, but refuses to make any sort of speech beforehand, despite Louisa's coaxing, and halfway through the ceremony he gets bored and simply tells all the pupils who have won to stand up and he promptly hands them their medals.
He the stomps back to his surgery while an angry Louisa runs after him, begging him to stop, and as she does so, she is hit by a car…
